Orphans R Us
By Julie Ferwerda

nancy the weaselHaiti was my first-ever mission trip. I will never forget anything about it, but especially the kids. Like, who could forget Nancy? She somehow snuck suddenly into every single photograph akin to pop goes the weasel. She was a happy, smiling girl, in spite of the horrendous things that she had endured in her eleven years. To our delight, we recently received a video from the orphanage, featuring none other than—Nancy. Here's a short peek into her story...

Courage Is About Taking the First Step
Guest Author: Katie Davis-20-year old missionary to Uganda

katie davisKatie Davis had it all going for her and decided to leave the American Dream behind to follow God's amazing, crazy plan for her life in Uganda—a plan, that to this date, has entailed her becoming a single mom of 14 children at the age of 21. Here's Katie's story in her own words...

Bearing Young Fruit

Lauren childWho says younger children can't be out changing the world now? Nine year old, Lauren McCarthy, of The Woodlands, Texas, proves its possible! Raised as an arrow, her spiritual training is already paying off through her love of serving and teaching other children!

Lauren first began visiting the mission field in Guatemala at the age of five, when her parents, Brian and Margarita, took her to celebrate the graduation of their sponsored child at Casa Aleluya, an orphanage for abused or abandoned children. During their trips, they would also minister to the children at the home. This past year, Lauren got to go with a ministry team of women from her church. Margarita says, "I was worried about how the women would respond, but they loved having her along and it was fun to watch her interact with them."

Teaching Our Children About Free Will
By Julie Ferwerda

fenced yardAs our children begin to mature, they're going to encounter difficult people—ill-intentioned people who seem to have significant negative control over their lives. They will likely encounter bullies, difficult family members, betraying "friends," unfair teachers, and critical bosses. How do we teach our children to handle these situations and to rest in the comfort of God's sovereignty? How do we teach them to see these situations as "divine appointments" for their character growth and opportunities to see God begin developing them into "overcomers?"

I'll be regularly posting little Bible lessons that will attempt to help families learn how to piece together the amazing connections between the Old Testament and New Testament. Here's our first lesson:

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Check out the Hebrew picture language of this verse, reading from right to left:
